The Chess Club remained undefeated throughout its season, going 12-0 heading into the state championship.
The team placed 2nd in state, tying Catalina Foothills High School for the state championship, but lost first place by a tie-breaker.
The individual competition tournament was held on Nov. 21 and Nov. 22 at Cibola High School in Yuma. The top 15 from the region qualify for the individual tournament.
Seniors Benjamin Shindel, Christopher Dilli, and Maclain Bonfield qualified for the individual state competition. Dilli got 9th,Shindel got 13th, and Bonfield got 30th in the individual competition.
Normally, teams play others in their region, but when it comes to state tournaments and individual competitions, all regions come together.
24 of the best teams from around the state meet and compete to see which school is the best.
There are also individual competitions in which members will play opponents from other schools, and the more matches they win, the higher their scores in their individual competition. Each match takes about two hours.
“We did well and had a lot of fun,” president Christopher Dilli said.
Even though the season has ended, the chess team continues to play daily.
“I would recommend Chess Club because it is fun, and we can help each other to improve. It means that almost every day we have the opportunity to play someone,” secretary Maclain Bonfield said.
Chess Club meets everyday at lunch in room 408 and welcomes any player.
