Swim and Dive is off to a great season.
Despite losing the meet to Campo Verde on Thurs., Sept 4, the team performed well and a new school record was set.
Junior Kira Thomas set a new record for the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:16.05. This time broke the previous record of 5:17.15, which was set last year by Paula Hernandez Medina.
Thomas is a dedicated club swimmer, but was unable to swim last year because she had just transferred schools.
“I have practice six days a week,” Thomas said. “I’ve been doing it my whole life and it’s fun for me. I love all the friends I make.”
Thomas also took first in the 200 yard freestyle over Campo Verde. Thomas was not, however, the only double event winner.
Senior Emily Bley won the 200 yard individual medley and the 100 yard backstroke, and sophomore Tashi Gorzen won both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle.
Gorzen has plans to further her swimming career.
“I’ve been doing it my whole life and I want to do swim in college,” Gorzen said.
The girls team also won the 200 yard medley relay.
On the boys side, there were fewer successes. The boys also won the 200 yard medley relay, but the only individual winner was senior Connor Boyles.
Boyles took first in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 57.8, which was a personal record for the swimmer.
“Swim forces me to push my limits,” Boyles said. “Most of the swimmers I’m competing against are, to be completely honest, a lot better than me.”
Although this has meet was significantly closer than in years past, Campo Verde still won the meet, with the scores standing.
The team continues to have meets weekly and continues to place high in many events.
