Project Hail Mary is the latest science fiction film to hit theaters, racking up over 334 million dollars in the box office. Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller—the same duo behind the Spider-Verse films—and starring Ryan Gosling, who is literally me, this movie is a stellar adaptation of Andy Weir’s 2021 sci-fi novel by the same name.
The story follows Ryland Grace: a middle-school science teacher suffering from amnesia… in the middle of space. While piecing together both his identity and his mission to save Earth, he accidentally makes first contact with intelligent alien life. Together, Grace and his Eridian friend Rocky must find a way to save both their planets, risking their lives for their homes, and for each other.
Now, when I say… that this film… is going to punch you in the gut! I’m serious, this is what we need more of in movies! Movies that have color, movies that show emotion, movies that know when to be funny and when to be sad! Grace and Rocky’s relationship is so entertaining to watch, and they truly are the heart of the film.
Greig Fraser’s cinematography is beautiful, the soundtrack by Daniel Pemberton is amazing, and the comedy is practically perfect.
If you want an equally hopeful and hilarious space adventure, or if you’re in the mood for a star-themed movie for Prom, then Project Hail Mary is the film for you! I rate this movie two thumbs up… or down, I guess. Close enough.
That’s it for today’s movie review!
