For students taught by Mr. Barkdoll, a McClintock math and science teacher, the day before Thanksgiving brings an event they are definitely grateful for. For almost 20 years, the day before Thanksgiving break begins has been the date of the annual Turkey Bowl.
The event is exactly what it sounds like. In an interview on the subject, Mr. Barkdoll himself describes it best: “We take a frozen turkey and sling it down the sidewalk on senior lawn”. The event involved students competing to knock down liter bottles with the frozen turkey, which is kept frozen throughout the year until it is needed.
McClintock is known as a school rich with tradition. Students and staff alike find meaning and community in the traditions that have slowly become part of campus life. The Turkey Bowl is one such tradition. The hard workers of Mr. Barkdoll’s classes value the event as something bigger than just throwing a turkey around senior lawn. For McClintock, the Turkey Bowl is a treasured tradition that brings people together.
