The Five Nights At Freddy’s movie boasts a massive profit and rave audience reviews, yet has a bad critic score on almost every site. Just why is this?
Well, most critics fundamentally misunderstand the appeal of the movie and games. Those expecting a serious horror movie, something with a plot that tries hard to keep the central mystery a mystery, and something that mimics the gameplay of the original FNAF, were all disappointed. But the thing is, the games have almost never been serious, and expecting a PG-13 movie to be an actually scary experience is a bit of a stretch. Additionally, the people following the games for the story(AKA everybody, because the gameplay certainly isn’t good enough to keep coming back for nearly a decade) already know the answer to the mystery from the outset.
So why is this movie good, if it seems to make so many errors? Because it’s fundamentally a movie for fans. So while a 50 year old who thinks MatPat is some kind of disease might not enjoy it, odds are you will.
