On Thurs., Oct. 27, 13 MHS Guidon and the historian students attended the annual AIPA fall convention at ASU.

At the end of the convention, the AIPA held an award ceremony to recognize schools for their accomplishments with their publications, newspaper took home 11 awards.

“[I received an] honorable mention opinions page layout award,” blogs editor sophomore Kristen Le said.

As a sophomore in journalism they are usually starting off as a reporter and then gradually become an editor.

“I was surprised because it was one of my first page layouts and I was still inexperienced at the time,” Le said.

The Guidon has been attending these conventions for years and every year there has been no disappointment in knowledge or awards.

“[The AIPA convention taught me] how to create strong features on people and events around the school,” managing editor sophomore Katelynn Showers said.

The students that go to the conventions choose two sessions that they find interesting and want to learn more about.

“The first session I went to was about how a news room works, the different processes of a news room. The second session was about feature writing and how to create strong journalistic writing and strong writing,” Showers said.

McClintock competes against people from all over the state that attends the convention.

“The most interesting thing [about the AIPA convention] is going to learn more about journalism and seeing how other schools run their journalism\newspaper class,” Showers said.

There are improvements to be made in everything people do, and as for the Guidon, there are slight areas to be worked on.

“I hope we get better and faster at page layouts. Also have stronger news, sports, and feature writing,” Showers said.
