McClintock High School’s security staff team is made up of five security guards, one officer, and the head of the department. Each day these members are faced with the serious responsibility to protect the school and its students from any situation that may arise.
In order to keep track of everything that is going on in the security department, there must be someone at the forefront. Assistant Principal of Athletics Susan Edwards, has taken on the responsibility of being in charge of the security team with the help of her lead security guard, Carlos Vega.
“[As I am in charge of the security staff,] I oversee all of the fire drills and lockdown procedures,” Edwards said.
Every two weeks Edwards and Vega meet up in order to discuss any situations in the department, including placement and rotations for the other security guards. Along with that meeting, the whole safety team meets up at least once a month.
“In my head I always have to be proactive,” Edwards said. “Most of my job is figuring out how to have answers for ‘what if’ scenarios.”
Edwards leads an annual prep hour meeting that all teachers must attend to learn how to handle the ‘what if’ scenarios. Every teacher is also required to keep those ‘what if’ plans on hand in their classrooms.
In order to promote safety for the entire school, it is Edward’s job to make sure the everyone is prepared.
