On Thurs., Apr. 23, the SADD club sponsored a mock DUI assembly. The presentation was staged like a real situation where a drunken student causes an accident.
Students and their mothers were actors in the assembly. The purpose of the assembly was to inform students about the dangers of driving under the influence.
“Students saw how close to home a tragic event like this could be,” Detective Gabriel Gomez said. “The ultimate goal was to show the consequences of drinking and driving that unfortunately play out every prom season around the country.”
The Tempe Fire Department, police, ambulances, and even a helicopter all made a dramatic entrance to demonstrate what happens during and after a drunk driving accident.
After the reenactment, speaker Michael J. DiPatri discussed how his son died due to someone else’s irresponsibility.
The Mock DUI assembly rotates around schools so that each school hosts it every four years.
