Varsity Baseball clinched the Metro Regional title,  qualifying them for a spot in the state championship.

Their first round in the tournament was on Sat.,  April 29 against Cienega at home. They beat them 5-3 to advance to the second round.

“[The players] set goals earlier in the year and they’ve met every goal. I think they have been very successful and played to their capability,” Coach Paul Mathers said.

In the second round on Tues., May 2, they faced #1 Liberty, and lost 15-2. They then faced #5 Mesquite on Thurs., May 4 and lost 0-5, ending their fabulous season.

The team has worked hard to achieve this level of success, ending the season with a better record than in past years.

“We always talk about who you compete against. You don’t really compete against the other team; you compete against yourself to be better than you were the day before or the play before. We challenge ourselves to be better all the time,” Mathers said.

Senior Sergio Jimenez is the baseball team’s captain and he has seen progress in his teammates this past season.

Overall, the boys played their best and to keep them motivated, they always remind themselves of this particular quote.

“I’m not in competition with anyone but myself. My goal is to beat my last performance.”-Celine Dion.
