The chess club remains undefeated, going 12-0 in the region onto the state championship.
The McClintock chess club is made up of both JV and varsity members. The chess team has been taking their tournaments by storm considering they are only four regions in our state and the McClintock team is first in our school region.
Our school region includes Tempe, Chandler, Scottsdale, Ahwatukee, and parts of Phoenix. By being one of the top teams in the region McClintock can attend the State Tournament.
Close to 20 teams from different schools around the state meet and compete to see who is qualified for state. There also are individual competitions in which members will play different opponents from other schools. Each match takes about two hours.
“Our team is uniquely prepared for individual tournaments, as we utilize deepening preparation and prepare for specific opponents from across the state,” president Christopher Dilli said,
The team has already qualified for state. The state tournaments will be held at McClintock High School, Nov. 7-8, and only five to six schools qualify from our region.
“I would recommend chess club because it is fun and together we can help each other to improve for state, it means pretty much everyday we always have the opportunity to play someone,” secretary Maclain Bonfield said.
Chess club meets everyday at lunch in room 408 and they welcome any player.
“I would recommend chess club, it’s fun being part of a state-wide institute like the AIA (Arizona Interscholastic Association),” vice president Benjamin Shindel said.
