STAND is a brand new tutoring system co-founded by seniors Francesca Callicotte and Mira Theilmann that will be introduced to McClintock after fall break.
“Since there isn’t a tutoring program on campus, we needed to unify everything to make it easier for students,” Theilmann said.
STAND is completely free and is open to all students who need or want to join. The program provides tutors for all subjects and aims to be convenient and doable for everyone involved, both tutors and students.
“There are kids out there that need help but they can’t afford it, so I wanted to give everyone a chance to exceed,” Callicotte said.
Theilmann and Callicotte first presented the tutoring concept early last Spring to the Administrative Council. Both administration and department heads were very receptive to the plan. Implementation of the plan has been in the works ever since.
“The general idea is we have a massive database of tutors so we can match people up,” Theilmann said.
To join STAND, both students that need help and tutors can sign up by visiting their website and filling out the application. From there, tutors and students will be matched up by subjects. Tutors must ask two teachers for letters of recommendation and meet certain standards, including a sufficient GPA, preferably a 3.4 or above, and current enrollment in a higher-level class in their respective subjects.
Applications will be available to tutors before fall break, and applications for those in need of tutoring will be accepted following fall break. After being matched up, tutors will be contacting their students via email, text message, or in person in order to meet up regularly, whenever is convenient for both individuals.
“The kids who are being tutored will get that extra push they need in order to succeed in the classrooms. The tutors helping them out will be able to get life lessons,” Callicotte said.
