McClintock principal Derek Hoffland and PE & Drop Out Coordinator Sam Dentz accepted the ice bucket challenge at lunch on Thurs., August 21 on Senior Lawn.
The ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) ice bucket Challenge is intended to raise money and awareness for the disease, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. This disease affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord so that they do not function correctly.
Millions of people have been doing this challenge to raise awareness for the ALS ice bucket challenge by pouring ice-cold water on themselves.
“Now that celebrities are doing the challenge, it’s bringing a lot more awareness,” junior Kendra James said.
Many celebrities have been doing this challenge as well, such as George W. Bush, Tom Cruise, Taylor Swift, Steven Spielberg, Carrie Underwood, Shakira, Mark Wahlgerg, Jennifer Lopez, Paul Bissonnette, among other famous celebrities.
“I am donating to the cause of ALS,” sophomore Emma Hammond said.
As of Thurs., August 21, ALS has raised more than $41.8 million in donations. This money is going to help people with ALS.
The ice bucket challenge is not only in the U.S, but it is now global spreading all across the globe.
“I think it’s amazing how it’s becoming global,” sophomore Graydon Sharp said.
Numbers show that more than 28 million people have taken the ice bucket challenge, and more are still to come.
