Born and raised in Tempe, well-rounded senior, Alexys Torres has set the standard for an extraordinary high school student ought to be.
In the fall of her junior year, Torres tried to enlist into the military but was unable to.
“I thought joining the army would be a good career path and it was just something I was interested in at the time,” Alexys Torres said.
Due to her asthma, she was unable to pursue her dream of joining the army. Although disappointed, Torres was eager to find something else she could work toward.
In Sep. of 2014, Torres joined a program called Tempe Police Explorers. According to the Tempe Police and Fire website, “The Explorer Program provides training in a variety of law enforcement topics, participation in local and national skills & knowledge competitions and involvement in department and community service projects.” The program takes place on weekends in order not to interfere with school.
“I always wanted to go into law enforcement but I always thought I’d do it after the military,” Torres said.
While attending this weekend program, Torres is also involved in countless programs here at McClintock. She has taken advanced classes since her freshman year and is taking two AP classes this year. She is apart of the National Hispanic Honors Society and is the Treasurer of the Auto Club. Torres has also participated in cross-country and track all four years, as well as soccer for three. On her own time, Torres participates in PT the Tempe Police Explorer program offers.
In the fall Torres plans to attend ASU and continue working toward her dream of working in law enforcement.
