Dual enrollment is an opportunity for high school students to take classes and earn college level credit for them. There are a large variety of classes that are available.
There are several ways to know if you as a student are eligible to take a dual enrollment class. You must be enrolled in a class that is participating in the dual enrollment program. That is the only thing some classes require to be eligible, but some students must take the Accuplacer test for math.
The time for McClintock students to enroll for dual enrollment is now over, but it isn’t impossible for them to do so. If a student still wants to enroll and be considered for a class, they must go to their councilor instead of their teacher or contact Rio Salado themselves by the 29 of August.
The program is not free, but it is by far less expensive than university classes.
“I do think that dual enrollment is a good idea because it costs so much less to take it through Rio Salado than it does to go through a big university,” junior Savannah Reitzel said.
By taking dual enrollment classes, a student is more likely to take less time to go through their college and university classes later on because they’ve taken those college classes and gotten the credits necessary.
“It’ll help students get college credits before they exit high school which will shorten the amount of time you may have to spend in college,” Guidance Department Chair Melinda Coronado said.
Dual enrollment transfers to many colleges and universities, however there are a few places that do not accept the credits.
“I think if you’re planning to go to college and you aren’t exactly sure what you’re going to do for college I think it’s a good idea,” mathematics teacher Amy Torregrossa said.
“I took dual enrollment classes last year but I decided not to take them and that was a big mistake,” Reitzel said.
